Close to a hundred farmers from the small village of Anislagan, Surigao, Mindanao, Philippines visited the Surigao provincial jail in Surigao City where Rico T. Amarille has been detained since March 24 for two counts of attempted homicide and handed the 1,000 pesos they raised over the weekend.

Anislagan is an agricultural village on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao with two thousand residents has vowed to keep their land protected from one of the world’s largest mining conglomerates, Anglo American Plc., and free of mining projects.

Anislagan, Surigao del Norte – In December 11, 2009, the Asst. Mgr. for Environment of Philex Mining/ Silangan Mindanao Mining Company (SMMC), MR. EUFRONIO A. ORTIZ, JR., wrote to the Bgy. Capt. Manuel Tejada of their intention to make a Livelihood Training Center within the 1 hectare land they purchased within the barangay.

The Barangay Council provided a venue to hear their planned project in a barangay session.

Surigao del Norte — It is little known that a small village in Mindanao thwarted Philex Mining, the Philippine’s largest mining firm, after the community blocked the firm’s entry to inaugurate a pseudo-livelihood training center on 11 January 2010.

Almost the entire populace of Anislagan, Placer, Surigao del Norte installed a makeshift checkpoint as early as 5:00am in preparation for the inauguration of the newly bought 1 hectare of land by Philex for the proposed livelihood training center.

Anislagan, Placer, Surigao del Norte is an area very rich in natural resources. It has been identified by the government as its priority area in mining because of its rich mineral resources. It has first-class nickel and gold minerals. It is also abundant in its farm produce. Lakes, rivers, and spring, also surround it.

Ex-militiamen take villagers hostage in S. Philippines

MANILA — Government-armed former militiamen accused of murder and banditry kidnapped more than 70 villagers and children Thursday from a southern Philippines village, demanding that charges be dropped against them before they would free the hostages.

The abductions raised fresh questions about the government’s long-standing policy of arming civilian volunteers to protect against insurgencies. The day before, 100 other militiamen in the south were added to the list of those accused of slaughtering civilians in the country’s worst political massacre.

Anglo To Explore For Copper, Gold In N Philippines - Official

MANILA – Anglo American PLC (AAUK) is looking for copper and gold in Apayao province in the northern Philippines, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau said.

The agency has already approved an exploration permit that would allow Anglo to look for minerals in the area, MGB director Horacio Ramos told reporters.

The approval follows Anglo’s decision to terminate an agreement with local mining firm Philex Mining Corp. (PX.PH). on joint exploration of the Boyongan copper-gold property in the southern Philippines, due to differences over how to proceed with the project.

BAGUIO CITY — Community elders and environmental groups in the region branded the Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded reforestation projects of the Agno and Chico Rivers’ watersheds as an exercise in futility.

Cordillera Elders’ Alliance (CEA) and Benguet Mining Action Alert Network (BMAAN) hit the project that is supposed to protect the watersheds as useless, because the government also allows mining applications that threaten to destroy these watersheds.

The watersheds for the Chico and Agno Rivers were among the forest areas in the country which would be financed by the $80 mill

Filipino environment advocates slam Australian mining project

A group of environment advocates from the Philippines recently slammed an Australian mining company.

Sibuyan Island Sentinels coordinator Rodne Galicha vented the group’s sentiments against the nickel supply agreement between BHP Billiton, the mining company, and the Sibuyan Nickle Properties Development Corporation (SNPDC).

Chief among these concerns are their group’s concern for what the mining project would do to the environment of Sibuyan.

Galicha said that they are worried over the activities of Queensland Nickel, a BHP Billiton subsidiary, which wants to establish a nickel mine

Farmers install 15–foot scarecrow to ward off mining firm

“The women, men, youth, and children assisted in the installation of a 15 feet tall scarecrow as our symbolic edifice against mining,” Rizalina Lisbos, a mother of four, narrated.

The members of Anislagan Bantay Kalikasan Task Force (ABAKATAF) of barangay Anislagan, Placer, Surigao del Norte installed a scarecrow as a symbol of the community’s strong staunch against mining which threatens their farm lands.

Anislagan is an agricultural community of about 400 households or roughly 2,000 individuals.
