Philippines – On the 24th August more than 300 members of local communities from Didipio, Nueva Vizcaya, and their allies gathered to demand that Australian mining multinational Oceana Gold ceases operations at its Didipio mine and leaves the area.

Oceana Gold (Philippines) (OGPI) has been operating its Didipio gold-copper mine in the area since 2013. Its activities have been dogged by controversy.

MANILA – Indigenous Cordilleran communities of Mankayan town, Benguet province have been crying foul over the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement that will pave the way for a new mineral agreement for the Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company (LCMCo), widely blamed by tribal folk for the environmental degradation caused by copper and gold mining in their area since 1936.

The spokesman of Dr. Cheloka Beyani, the UN Special Rapporteur for Internally Displaced Peoples, has accused the Armed Forces of the Philippines of “gross misrepresentation” following the release of a military statement on lumad evacuees in Davao City.

The AFP Eastern Mindanao Command press release carried the title: “LUMADS IN HARAN ARE MANIPULATED: Not Evacuees but victims of trafficking”.

That statement has been pushed by Maj. Harold Cabunoc and handpicked media to boost the claim — first raised by North Cotabato Rep.
