Environmental groups rebuke General Emmanuel Bautista, the new Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), for falsely presenting the AFP as green warriors and masking the military’s real character as protectors of environmental criminals and perpetrators of human rights violations.

Cagayan de Oro City – Daisy Paborada, Rosalie Cabal and Sharon Liguyon will fly to the national capital today. They will join the ‘Manilakbayan ng Mindanao’ or MANILAKBAYAN (Journey to Manila) that will bring around a hundred delegates from all over Mindanao to the heart of Manila for a week-long series of events.

The delegates—composed mainly of families of slain community leaders of Mindanao—will lobby their cases to relevant government offices and foreign consulates in Manila and press for justice.

Two fact-finding missions simultaneously held last week in Bukidnon and Kiblawan, Davao del Sur finds indigenous peoples attacked by mining-backed military and paramilitary groups.

The missions, led by 200 indigenous peoples and environment advocates, said the murders of Matigsalog chieftain Jimmy Liguyon in San Fernando, Bukdinon and Blaan Juvy Capion in Kiblawan are linked to their communities’ opposition to large-scale mining companies that are applying for exploration in their villages.

PAVING THE WAY TO THE WORLD CONFERENCE ON INDIGENOUS PEOPLES (WCIP)

DEAR FRIENDS,

The UN General Assembly decided, through its resolution A/RES/65/198 of 21 December 2010, to organize a high-level plenary meeting of the General Assembly in 2014, to be known as the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples (WCIP).(http://social.un.org/index/IndigenousPeoples/WorldConference.aspx). As a result, several initiatives and meetings to prepare for the WCIP are now in full blast.

ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Oct. 15, 2012) – A group of Subanen tribal leaders have called on the Aquino government to temporarily halt all mining operations in Zamboanga del Sur province in the southern Philippines until Manila acts on their legal claims over a vast tract of ancestral lands.

The Subanen leaders are claiming some 23,800 hectares of lands in the town of Bayog where several mining companies and small scale miners are operating.
