Mining expansion, lack of communication leading to more conflicts - study - Peru

The growth in the number of mining concessions in Peru coupled with poor communication with local communities affected by the new developments are largely responsible for an increase in social conflicts in the nation, according to a study compiled by three local NGOs.

Mining concessions in Peru currently cover 19.8Mha of national territory, up 165% from approximately 7.45Mha in 2002, according to the study.

The region with the highest percentage of territory under concession is Apurimac, with over 55%.

Clash Over Peru Irrigation Project Kills One

LIMA, Peru —- The police and demonstrators opposed to an irrigation project in the south of the country clashed Thursday, killing one man and injuring 18, as President Alan Garcia faced a new conflict over natural resources in Peru’s surging economy.

The skirmish occurred before dawn in the town of Espinar, 400 miles south of Lima, officials in Peru’s human rights office said. Police officers fought with protesters who contended that the Majes-Siguas II irrigation project would leave Espinar without water, said Silvio Campana of the human rights office, which tries to mediate conflicts.

In July 2010, the Fuerza de Mujeres Wayuu, an indigenous women’s organisation, created by and composed of members of the Wayuu community in Colombia, presented a report to the United Nations’ Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), denouncing the multiple forms of human rights violations that Wayuu women experience due to their gender and because they belong to an indigenous group fighting for the recognition of their land rights in Colombia.

"Whoever Opposes Mining is Seen as a Terrorist"-Wikileaks on the US and Peru

A Wikileaks cable reveals the US Embassy in Lima, Peru, identified Indigenous activists and tracked the involvement of Bolivian President Evo Morales, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, Bolivia Ambassador Pablo Solon, prominent Quechua activist Miguel Palacin Quispe and community leaders.

Since the writing of this cable, the bonds with Native Americans and First Nations have grown stronger in the struggles for justice. Bolivian President Morales and Ambassador Solon were in the forefront of the Indigenous global climate change efforts in 2010.

LIMA (Reuters) – Two people were killed and 50 were injured in protests against Xstrata’s Peruvian copper mine Tintaya on Monday, prompting the government to suspend freedom of assembly in a bid to break roadblocks isolating the mine.
