Participants at the International Expert Workshop on the World Heritage Convention and Indigenous Peoples, Copenhagen, 20-21 September 2012

In September 2012 an Expert Workshop on the World Heritage Convention and Indigenous Peoples took place in Copenhagen which was attended by Indigenous experts and representatives from all continents. The expert workshop resulted in a Call to Action addressing the “urgent need to make the implementation of UNESCO’s World Heritage Convention consistent with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples”.

James Bay Cree and Quebec Earn Environmental Accolades for Governance Pact

The Eeyou Istchee (Grand Council of the Cree) of James Bay have signed a governance agreement with the government of Quebec that not only gives the First Nation much more control over its land but also has earned accolades from environmental sources for its protective measures for the boreal forest.

Under the accord, the James Bay Cree will be the decision makers on 28,571 square miles of territory.

PIPLinks coordinator Geoff Nettleton attended the inaugral meeting of the newly established ‘UN Working Group on the issues of Human Rights and Transnational Corporations and other Business Enterprises’ on Friday 20th January in Geneva. The Working Group held an ´informal exchange with other stakeholders’. Among the stakeholders present are indigenous representatives and NGOs working for the rights of indigenous peoples.

UN agency ignores indigenous approach to knowledge protection

Communities the world over risk losing control over their traditional knowledge because a UN agency insists on using existing intellectual property standards for managing access to the information.

This is among the findings of the first detailed comparative study of customary approaches to protecting and sharing traditional knowledge and biological resources, published today (29 June) by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED).

The findings come ahead of a meeting of the World Intellectual Proper

Halloween is fast approaching, and I am filled with scary thoughts. I can imagine little ghosts and goblins shrieking for treats. I can imagine costumed superheroes playing gruesome tricks. But the truly frightening thing that I came across this week is the decision made by the Philippine government to allow mining companies to arm their private security forces.

According to reports from GMANews.TV, mining companies in the Philippines will be allowed to established civilian auxiliary armed groups (CAGs) as an adjunct to the local military.
