PAGADIAN CITY, Philippines – Citing the need to protect the environment, a regional trial court here on Friday ordered the Canadian mining company TVI Resources to halt its road construction project and similar activities in Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur.

Records of the case show that local residents had accused TVI of destroying naturally grown trees and rubber trees in the construction of a road that would connect the villages of Dipili, Pulang Bato and Depore.

[BAYOG, Zamboanga del Sur—Subanen living in the village of Conacon have left their homes, fearing that mounting tension between two rival security agencies would erupt into a shooting battle, officials said Thursday.

ZAMBOANGA City, Philippines—The continued presence of security forces of the mining company Lupa Pigegetawan in mineral-rich Subanen communities in Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur, has been sowing fear among the locals, the province’s governor, Antonio Cerilles, said Wednesday.

[This also applies to other parts of the country.] So we hear of big businesses that bribe government officials to get favors. We see local communities and NGOs fighting companies that ignore human rights and defile the environment.

BAYOG, Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines — A tribal chieftain here accused former military officials of using Subanen folk as dummies in operating a mining company.

Engr. Abdul Puengan, of the National Commission on the Indigenous Peoples in Western Mindanao, also issued a similar statement.
