A MEDIA practitioner and seven other people, including a member of the Municipal Council in Bayug, Zamboanga del Sur, filed a petition for Writ of Amparo before the Court of Appeals (CA) in Cagayan de Oro City for alleged threats from the officers and agents of Toronto Ventures Inc.

Some thousands of indigenous people all over the Philippines, especially in Mindanao, especially the Subaanen people, on the Zamboanga Peninsula have struggle for years to stop mining corporations from moving in to explore and mine the mountains and hills. They are victims of corrupt government officials and even judges who are captivated by the vested interest of the mining industry.

Some Indigenous people are sadly being forced to turn to armed resistance as the mining corporations move into their lands.

BAGUIO CITY – Members of the Beaconsfield Initiative, an exposure mission comprised mostly of Canadian church members, visited the Cordillera Region last week. Focusing on areas where Canadian Mining Companies operate, they found out that there is an ongoing “legal terrorism” victimizing the community people.

Reverend Patricia Lisson, directress of the St. Columbia House in Canada, defined “legal terrorism” as the use of law over the rights of the people.

PAGADIAN CITY (Mindanao Examiner / May 21, 2012) – Communist rebels have threatened to attack mining firms operating in the Zamboanga Peninsula in the southern Philippines.

Jorge Madlos, a spokesman for the New People’s Army, also warned soldiers and policemen from protecting mining firms he accused of plundering natural resources.
