Quezon City, Philippines – Alyansa Tigil Mina and its international partners question the Mines and Geosciences Bureau decision to allow the Siana Mines operation to continue in Surigao del Norte despite historical reports of mine flooding and underground fire.

The group is also wary of the silence of the government agency pertaining to recent reports of land instability in mines since April.

Manila – A mining company announced today it has shut down operations at a nickel mine in the southern Philippine province of Surigao del Sur, after locals blocked the entrance, citing environmental concerns.

Members of the Badjao tribe in the village of Cabangahan, Catilan town, formed a human barricade on Monday to prevent Marcventures Mining and Development Corporation (MDCC) from entering the area, a federally designated watershed.

“We got support from the local police and military,” said village leader Jimmy Bat-ao.

Rights group Karapatan in Caraga slammed on Monday the arrest of a leader of an indigenous and partylist group in the region, claiming it was a political harassment.

Karapatan-Caraga Secretary General Naty Castro said policemen who arrested Jalandoni Campos were just in plainclothes.

“Jalandoni Campos’s arrest is blatant political harassment against progressive people’s organizations and partylists,” Castro said.

Some 241 individuals, mostly women and children, from a remote village in Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte evacuated anew after about 100 elements of the Special Forces of the 4th Infantry Division under a certain Col. Camba encamped in their community and harassed the locals.

Surigao del Norte – Residents of barangay Anislagan, Placer municipality, Surigao del Norte denounce the plan of Philex Mining Corporation to have its Silangan Mindanao Projects fully operational by 2017.

The Task Force-Justice for Environmental Defenders (TF-JED) vehemently condemned today the report of the violent torture and killing of Genesis Ambason last September 13 in Brgy. Binikalan, San Luis, Agusan del Sur.

According to a report from the Rural Missionaries of the Philippines in Northern Mindanao, the 23 year-old secretary general of grassroots indigenous organization Tagdumahan sustained two gunshot wounds each in his right chest and hip, with wounds on each side of his spine and dark bruises in his face and chest.
