Mayor: Itogon mining, tourism can co-exist

ITOGON Mayor Oscar Camantiles foresees a marriage between mining and tourism in his town.

Camantiles championed the Benguet Corporation example, which has mined the area for decades and crafted the unique Balatoc underground mine tour, a first in the country.

“It can be done,” he said.

The mine tour is one of the most successful tourism come-ons of the municipality and utilizes the abandoned areas of the mining company, in a bid to preserve employment, culture and to familiarize the public to life inside the mines.

Beverly Longid was born in Lepanto, Mankayan. Her lolo (grandfather), a worker from the Lepanto mines, raised her and her three siblings. An articulate speaker, Lepanto Consolidated Mining Co. would have benefitted a lot from her as their organic resource person for their community relations.

Inspect, shut down large-scale mines in typhoon Pablo’s path—Kalikasan

As the Philippines braces itself against the upcoming tropical storm Bopha (Pablo), Kalikasan Party-list today warned government agencies to be on red alert for the storm’s impacts on vulnerable communities where large-scale mining operations are ongoing.

“The DENR should be ready to inspect and shut down operations of all large-scale mining sites lying in typhoon Pablo’s path,” Kalikasan Party-list National President Clemente Bautista, Jr. said in a statement.

ITOGON, Benguet — Officials disapproved Benguet Corporation’s opposition on applications for free patent titles of the indigenous peoples (IPs) of the municipality.

Legislative council’s presiding officer, Vice Mayor Noel Ngolob, said Benguet Corporation’s opposition has no basis.

Councilor Gerard Cornel said the claim of the IPs, who are mostly senior citizens, is valid.

Mayor Oscar Camantiles also said the claim of the IPs has basis.

Surigao del Norte – Residents of barangay Anislagan, Placer municipality, Surigao del Norte denounce the plan of Philex Mining Corporation to have its Silangan Mindanao Projects fully operational by 2017.

Investigate Philex dam collapse - indigenous peoples

BAGUIO CITY — Indigenous peoples and environment watchdogs in the Cordillera today urged an independent environmental investigation mission (EIM) saying that Philex Mining Company’s tailings pond 3 (TP3) collapsed, not just leaked, as company earlier alleged.

Katribu Indigenous People’s Partylist, Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA) and Amianan Salakniban in a press conference said the EIM on Philex TP3 would evaluate the damages that the collapse of dam crest has caused from August 1-30 and should come up with recommendations that would best address the issue.
