NPA rebels raid 2 mining firms in Mindanao

DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / June 9, 2012) – Communist rebels raided two mining firms and attacked government troops pursuing them Saturday in the southern Philippines, officials said.

Officials said undetermined number of New People’s Army rebels raided the Milagrosa mining firm after disarming private guards at around 1 a.m.

Officials stop T'boli activities

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines (PNA) — South Cotabato officials have ordered the immediate stoppage of all small-scale mining activities in T’boli town following the collapse of several mine tunnels in the area last week that left four miners dead.

South Cotabato Gov. Arthur Pingoy Jr. said Tuesday the local government issued a memorandum temporarily stopping all mining activities at a gold rush site in Barangay Kematu in T’boli pending an evaluation and review by government geology experts of the affected areas.

GENERAL SANTOS — Although Canadian miner Cadan Resources Corp. has obtained an environmental compliance certificate (ECC) for its T’boli gold-silver project, it can’t go into commercial production until its mining feasibility study is approved, the region’s mines bureau director said yesterday.

Constancio A. Paye, Jr., Mines and Geosciences Bureau regional director, said Cadan Resources has yet to submit a declaration of mining feasibility. “The proponent’s mining feasibility must be cleared by our national office.

2 miners killed, 2 others missing in South Cotabato

COTABATO, Philippines (Xinhua) — Two Filipino miners died while two others went missing yesterday after they were trapped and suffocated inside a tunnel in a gold-rich village in South Cotabato province, officials said today.

Local rescuers have retrieved the remains of two victims, Toto and Gary Olin, after the incident was reported to authorities around 5:00 p.m. yesterday in T’boli, South Cotabato, Ramon Ponce de Leon, the province’s environmental management office chief, told reporters.
